The heart chakra at its core is love, it is the center of your being and it bridges the gap between your physical and spiritual energies. It is the fourth chakra in the body, connecting the lower chakras, associated with survival and navigating the stresses of everyday living, to the higher chakras, where we begin to live in love and compassion and experience bliss and enlightenment. As the lower chakras fulfill the needs of the body, they build a strong foundation on which the heart chakra can easily open, addressing the needs of the heart, and paving the way for spiritual attunement.

The physical heart, the cardiac nerve plexus and the thymus gland are wards of the heart chakra, this is why we get "butterflies' 'when we get nervously excited, especially about love. The whole area of the chest, as well as the arms and shoulders, receive energy from the heart chakra. Add to that our lungs, our heart rate cannot escape our breath rate, and in meditation we use the breath to calm the heart. A strong heart, peak blood circulation, and a healthy immune system are benefits of a clear heart chakra, plus high lung capacity and upper body flexibility for greater expression of the love that we are. The heart chakra allows us to grow lovingly into an easy connection to ourselves, others, and to nature. We feel more free and sociable, balancing reason and emotion and finding ways to work together.

Love and compassion are the primary traits of the heart chakra. While we create healthy boundaries for ourselves, we radiate loving energy from within allowing us to feel acceptance. We find expansive peace and our spirit begins to reveal itself to our conscious awareness.

Love and fear are both potentials of the heart but when we choose love, we let go, we forgive, and we transcend the ego, leading us to a life of peace and acceptance of the world around us.
